Singapore programme helps Thai flood victims overcome trauma
Over the past three years, an international collaboration facilitated by the Singapore Institute of Mental Health has improved the capacity of mental health workers in China, Indonesia and Thailand to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
One PTSD sufferer was 60-year old Nucharee, a farmer and a survivor of cancer. Her life was turned upside down four years ago after Thailand’s worst floods in 50 years destroyed her livelihood.
In 2011, many districts in central Thailand were under floodwater for many months.
Singapore’s Institute of Mental Health and philanthropic organisation Temasek Foundation initiated a collaborative train-the-trainer programme called Disaster Mental Health Programme for Communities in Asia.
